Saunière erected this monument on the right to Lazarists in his church garden. He spent long periods away in places like Lyon. He wrote letters to the Banque Fritz Dörge in Budapest. He received money from the wife of the pretender to the French crown. He formed friendships with other local priests, at least one of whom was of noble birth and was the curé of a church that the Vatican had opposed the researcher known as Polycarpe de la Rivère to do any research there and in the surrounding area.

And on September 29th 1891 after he had reported in his diary that a tomb had been found and after a trip to Carcassonne he wrote:

'Vu Curé de Névian, Chez Gélis, Chez Carrière, Vu Cros et SECRET'

For some reason Saunière felt that the curé of Névian (a church nearer to Perpignan than Rennes le Chateau) didn't warrant a name in his personal diary. But he mentions a local priest who was later murdered (his killer has never been caught), he mentions a local doctor who was the personal doctor of the Abbé Boudet and a researcher and finally he also 'considered' the Bishop's secretary but not the Bishop himself about the 'SECRET'.

Detractors say that Saunière meant to say Secrétaire instead of Secret. This is not the only occasion when they alter facts to suit their pseudo-religious belief system. Cros IS the Secrétaire why would he first give Cros' name AND then remind himself that he was the Secrétaire? It doesn't make sense. Also after you'd written four names in your diary, could you remember the reason why you'd written their names in the diary several months on? So why didn't Saunière write down the reason he'd seen/considered these four people if it wasn't about the Secret?

There is no such word as Secretaire in the French Language. There is however a word Secrétaire, note the accent over the 'é' . Saunière would never abbreviate a word without including the accent because in French it would be nonsense.

Can someone please explain to me why a person who one day decides to concoct a phrase that turns out to be nonsense then decides to sit down and write a forty four page treatise describing how he made up the nonsense.
